Sin and the Christian


It's true--all have sinned. But after repentance and faith in Christ make a person a new creation, what part does sin have in the person's life? The following study was developed in answer to questions that many people have asked us about sin in the life of a Christian.

What should be a Christian's attitude about sin?

I Samuel 12:23 -- far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord

Psalm 17:3 -- I have resolved that my mouth will not sin

Job 27:3-6 -- my lips will not speak wickedness and my conscience will be clear as long as I live

Psalm 38:3-6, 18 -- if he sins, he is extremely troubled

Psalm 39:1 -- I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin

Psalm 119:133 -- pray to let no sin rule over me

Mark 9:43 -- avoid sin at all costs

Romans 6:11 -- count myself dead to sin

Psalm 141:3-4 -- pray for God to keep us from sin

Titus 2:14 -- we are eager and zealous to do what is right

What does God command regarding sin?

Genesis 4:7 -- you must master it

Leviticus 11:44-45, 19:2, 20:7 -- be holy as God is holy

Romans 12:1-2 -- offer ourselves as a living and holy sacrifice to God

I Corinthians 1:2 -- God calls us to be holy

Ephesians 1:4 -- we are chosen to be holy and blameless

I Thessalonians 4:7, II Timothy 1:9 -- we are called to live a holy life

I Peter 1:15-16 -- be holy as God is holy

Matthew 5:48 -- be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect

Ecclesiastes 12:13 -- obeying God is our duty

Hebrews 12:14 -- without holiness no one will see the Lord

John 8:34-36 -- everyone who sins is a slave to sin; the truth sets us free from sin

I Peter 2:21-22 -- we should follow in Christ's steps, committing no sin

Luke 1:74-75 -- because of Jesus, we are enabled to be holy and righteous all our days

II Samuel 22:33, Psalm 18:32 -- God makes my way perfect

Philippians 4:13 -- possible through Christ

Leviticus 20:8 -- it is the Lord who makes us holy

Psalm 130:8 -- God will free us from every sin

Proverbs 2:9 -- we can know the right course of action every time

I Corinthians 10:13 -- we will never be tempted above what we can overcome

I Peter 2:24 -- Jesus died so we can die to sin and live for righteousness

II Peter 1:3 -- God's power gives us everything we need to live a godly life

Titus 2:14 -- God's grace teaches us how to live and Jesus purifies us from all wickedness

John 8:36 -- if Jesus really set us free, then we are free indeed

I John 5:3, Deuteronomy 30:11 -- it isn't difficult to obey God

How does faith relate to a Christian's victory over sin?

Mark 10:27 -- with God, all things are possible; do YOU believe this?

Mark 11:22-26 -- ask in faith and you will receive; do YOU believe this?

Romans 14:23 -- whatever is not of faith is sin

I John 5:4 -- our faith gives us victory

John 14:12-14 -- do you believe this?

Ephesians 2:8-10 -- God works in us by grace through faith to do good works which he has prepared for us

What does the Bible say about Christians being holy now, during our lives in this world?

Philippians 1:10 -- we can be pure and blameless UNTIL the day of Christ

Titus 2:12 -- God's grace teaches us to live righteously in this present world

I John 4:17 -- in this world we are like him!

Luke 1:74-75 -- we can serve him in righteousness and holiness all our days

II Corinthians 9:8 -- at all times and in every way we will abound in every good work

Luke 1:6 -- Zechariah and Elizabeth were upright and observed all God's commands blamelessly

I Thessalonians 2:10 -- Paul was holy, righteous, and blameless

Philippians 4:9 -- Paul said to imitate everything he said or did

I Peter 1:22 -- speaks of people who are pure

Psalm 119:3 -- they do nothing wrong; they walk in God's ways

How does a Christian have victory over sin?

I John 5:4 -- must have faith

II Peter 1:3 -- through our knowledge of him

Psalm 119:9 -- by living by the Word of God

Psalm 119:11 -- by knowing the Word of God

Mark 14:38 -- keep alert and pray so that temptation does not overcome you

Philippians 1:9-10 -- love, abound in knowledge and depth of insight

Hebrews 12:14 -- make every effort

Romans 12:1-2 -- renew your mind; do not conform to the world

Ezekiel 36:25-29 -- God puts a new Spirit and heart in us so that we will be pure and obedient

Ephesians 6:10-18 -- put on the whole armor of God so that you can STAND

Ephesians 4:22-24 -- put off who you used to be and put on the new creation which was made to be like God in true righteousness and holiness

Philippians 4:8 -- think only about what is pure and right

Psalm 101:3 -- set nothing vile before your eyes

Proverbs 16:6 -- fear the Lord

Proverbs 3:5-6 -- trust in the Lord with all your heart, don't depend on your own understanding and he will direct you

II Timothy 3:16-17 -- the Scriptures thoroughly equip us for every good work
